Vermont’s statewide sales tax rate is 6%, applied to most retail sales. In addition, some municipalities impose a local option tax of 1%, bringing the combined rate to 7% in those areas. Local option taxes are enacted by town vote and apply only to sales within those specific jurisdictions.

With generally uniform tax rates across the state, it’s easy to calculate Vermont sales tax. Follow these steps after determining whether you’re subject to a 6% or 7% rate:
Multiply the Purchase Amount by the Sales Tax Rate to get the Sales Tax Amount.
Add the Sales Tax Amount Amount to the Purchase Amount to find the Total Cost
You can use these formulas or use our calculator for a faster answer.
Sales Tax = Purchase Amount × Sales Tax Rate
Total Cost = Purchase Amount + Sales Tax
