The holiday was first celebrated in Texas in 1865, and as you\u2019ll soon see, some of the oldest Black-owned businesses in the country sprang up just a few years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/media-ace\/includes\/lazy-load\/images\/blank.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.northone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/SEO_quote-and-photo-asset-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"oldest-black-owned-businesses\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-3253\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_oldest_Black-owned_business_EE_Ward_Moving_Storage_Co\"><\/span><strong>The oldest Black-owned business: E.E. Ward Moving &amp; Storage Co.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We were honored to speak to Brian Brooks, the co-owner of the oldest Black-owned business in the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/eeward.com\/\"><strong>E.E. Ward Moving and Storage Company<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Q_Tell_us_about_the_history_of_the_company\"><\/span><strong>Q: Tell us about the history of the company.<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> E.E. Ward Moving and Storage Company is based in Ohio, and was founded in 1881 by John T. Ward. Between 1842 and 1858, Ward helped conduct the Underground Railroad and not only transported escaped slaves, but also provided them shelter underneath his home. His business started with only two horses and a wagon, but over 140 years, E.E. Ward has become one of the oldest and most-trusted moving companies in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Q_What_does_being_a_small_business_owner_mean_to_you\"><\/span><strong>Q: What does being a small business owner mean to you?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian: <\/strong>It means responsibility and accountability, because small businesses are what employ many people in America. It also means facing and overcoming unique challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Q_What_kinds_of_challenges_do_you_face\"><\/span><strong>Q: What kinds of challenges do you face?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian: <\/strong>The challenges we experience as small business owners are totally different than what others might consider a challenge. We\u2019ve been to twenty banks and have been told \u201cno.\u201d We\u2019ve been to 50 corporations and have been told \u201cno.\u201d We\u2019ve been around for 141 years, and when you break down those years and really examine what we\u2019ve survived through\u2014two world wars, the Great Depression, stock market crashes, race riots, the Civil Rights Movement and now the pandemic\u2014it just proves that there\u2019s nothing like a small business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Q_Running_a_small_business_is_hard_Why_do_you_keep_doing_it\"><\/span><strong>Q: Running a small business is hard! Why do you keep doing it?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian: <\/strong>The drive. It\u2019s the drive to be the best. I don\u2019t get satisfaction from doing nothing and from being average, but I <em>do<\/em> get satisfaction when we continue striving to be the best. That\u2019s the juice: the desire to be better and to have raving fans as customers to show for it. That\u2019s what keeps us going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/media-ace\/includes\/lazy-load\/images\/blank.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.northone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/infographic-1024x842.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-3251\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong>7 Other Black-owned Businesses that are (Almost) a Century Old<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at seven other Black-owned businesses that are (almost) over a century old!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jones_Bar-B-Q_Diner\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JonesBarBQDiner\/\"><strong>Jones Bar-B-Q Diner<\/strong><\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Year founded<\/strong>: 1910<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Marianna, Arkansas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type of business<\/strong>: Restaurant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones Bar-B-Q Diner is widely considered the oldest Black-owned restaurant in the country, with roots that date back to 1910. The story goes that the original owners marinated smoked meat in a bathtub before opening an eatery in a single-family home in 1964. That location is still open today! The diner is the first restaurant in Arkansas to win a James Beard Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Philadelphia_Tribune\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillytrib.com\/\"><strong>The Philadelphia Tribune<\/strong><\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Year founded:<\/strong> 1884<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Location: <\/strong>Philadelphia, Pennsylvania<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type of business:<\/strong> Newspaper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Philadelphia Tribune was founded by Christopher J. Perry in 1884 when he was just 28 years old. It was a weekly one-page paper and by 1887, it averaged 3,225 weekly copies. The Philadelphia Tribune is the oldest Black-owned newspaper still in operation today. Perry poured his heart and soul into the periodical, working virtually every job from reporter to advertorial rep. Today, the Tribune has a circulation of nearly 220,000 and a readership of 600,000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Parker_House_Sausage_Company\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parkerhousesausage.com\/\"><strong>Parker House Sausage Company<\/strong><\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Year founded<\/strong>: 1926<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Chicago, Illinois<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type of business<\/strong>: Food Production<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1919, Judge H. Parker moved from Tennessee to Chicago, selling sausage links from a horse and carriage. In 1926, he founded Parker House Sausage Company, which still stands today at its original headquarters. This company has come a long way from a horse and carriage and today you can find this company\u2019s products in major retail stores, including Walmart.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"NC_Mutual\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncmutuallife.com\/\"><strong>NC Mutual<\/strong><\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Year founded:<\/strong> 1898<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Durham, North Carolina<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type of business:<\/strong> Life Insurance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded by former-slave-turned-entrepreneur John C. Merrick in 1898, NC Mutual is the oldest Black-owned life insurance company in the country. After securing a loan from wealthy tobacco industrialist Washington Duke, Merrick founded the North Carolina Mutual and Provident Association: one of the core businesses of Durham&#8217;s Black Wall Street.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Afro\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afro.com\/\"><strong>The Afro<\/strong><\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Year founded:<\/strong> 1892<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Baltimore, Maryland&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type of business:<\/strong> Newspaper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Afro was founded in 1892 by John Henry Murphy Sr., a freed slave who saw an opportunity to inspire and educate his fellow emancipated citizens. The periodical was actually a conglomerate: Murphy merged several independent church publications into a single paper. Today, the paper stands as the oldest family-owned Black newspaper in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Patillos_Bar-B-Q\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/patillosbbq.com\/\"><strong>Patillo&#8217;s Bar-B-Q<\/strong><\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Year founded<\/strong>: 1912<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Beaumont, Texas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type of business<\/strong>: Restaurant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 1912 by Jackson Patillo, Patillo&#8217;s Bar-B-Q is famous for its Cajun-Creole-inspired barbecue. The restaurant has moved around for more than a century, but today it\u2019s located in Beaumont, TX. A family-run business, it\u2019s owned and operated by Jackson\u2019s great-grandson, Robert Patillo, who serves up all kinds of original, delicious entr\u00e9es.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Indianapolis_Recorder\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/indianapolisrecorder.com\/\"><strong>The Indianapolis Recorder<\/strong><\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Year founded:<\/strong> 1895<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Indianapolis, Indiana<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type of business:<\/strong> Newspaper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From humble beginnings as a simple two-page church bulletin, the Indianapolis Recorder rose to become a powerhouse of reporting on national and global events. Over the last century, the paper\u2019s circulation rate has grown to 100,000. Still published today, it seeks to continue to support and empower its primarily African-American readership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_rise_of_Black-owned_small_businesses_in_America\"><\/span><strong>The rise of Black-owned small businesses in America<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of&nbsp; new Black-owned businesses has steadily grown over the years.&nbsp;As of early 2022, roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/national-news\/articles\/2022-04-13\/why-the-rate-of-black-business-ownership-is-going-up\">1.2 million African Americans were self-employed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to government census data, in 2019, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2022\/02\/increase-in-number-of-united-states-black-owned-businesses-between-2017-and-2019.html\">134,567 Black-owned employer businesses<\/a> (businesses with more than one employee) in the U.S. That figure is up from 124,551 in 2018 (8% increase), and it\u2019s continuing to rise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who\u2019s behind the surge in Black-owned businesses over the past few years? In a word: women. Black women account for an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/black-women-businesses-fuel-increase-pandemic-hit-entrepreneurship-covid-2022-2\">35% of all new Black-owned businesses<\/a>, and they account for an even greater share of the market year-over-year. It\u2019s an exciting time for minority business ownership!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Small_Black-owned_businesses_are_a_triumph_worth_celebrating\"><\/span><strong>Small Black-owned businesses are a triumph worth celebrating<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the first Black-owned business in America to the new Black-owned businesses that spring up each year\u2014North One celebrates the success of every entrepreneur who succeeds in creating something unique.\u00a0This Juneteenth, join us in recognizing the Black-owned businesses that paved the way for the surge of minority-owned enterprises we\u2019re seeing today.
